RELAY 2010

We had another great year at Relay!! There are so many people to THANK!

I have to throw a special THANK YOU to my SIL, Rikki. She kept telling me to give her an assignment so she ended up with the biggest one - T-Shirts!! She designed them and then ironed them all on. She did awesome and I am so happy with the final product!! Thanks Rik!

My friend Holly provided the vinyl for the T-shirts, flag, and sign. Check out her website vinylizeit.com. Again, they turned out awesome!

My sisters for decorations and craft items to sell! We sold over $200.00 worth of product.

Good friends Eric and Shalise for throwing together the Snow Cone machine at the last minute. It was a hit . . . especially with the younger generation Relay-ers!

Of course it would never happen without the love and support of Matt's family! and this year my family got a taste of what Relay is all about! I am so grateful for both families and the effort they put forth to support us. I love you all!!

I was lucky enough to have good friends from here in Cornish Relay with us this year. Both families have been affected by Cancer and it was great to have them come and experience it all with us. They were also great help with the Yard Sale. I couldn't have done it without them!

I am not going to keep listing everyone because I am sure to leave someone out. Just know I truly appreciate everyone's hard work and support. We would not Relay if we didn't have such great help!

The whole event raised over $70,000 for Cancer Research!

Most, if not all, of the money will stay here in Utah at our own Primary Children's and Huntsman Cancer Institute.

ODEE

We had clinic on the 6th of July. Kael was scheduled for his second to the last backpoke. (YaY!) After the reaction to last backpoke (throwing-up all day), Kael was very nervous to go. I promised him Dad and Grandpa would give him a blessing before we left. Monday night after all the 4th activities, he recieved a blessing from his Dad. We left early for clinic the next morning. Appointment was scheduled for 9:30 am and by 1:30 pm we were just getting ready for backpoke. Irritating. There was a little confusion among the Dr. and Nurses about his weight (it wasn't in his chart anywhere) and the next thing I know the nurse said "I gave him to much".
Dr: "How much"
Nurse: "5"
Dr. "Grab the pharmacy book and call for another Dr." (as she runs around the side of the bed and starts taking his pulses manually)
I can hear the nurse in the hallway call for backup and within 30 seconds, the room was full of dr.'s, nurses, and hospital administration. I am sitting in the corner trying to stay calm. At this point one Dr. is shaking him and calling out his name and a nurse is tearing all the equipment off the wall at the head of the bed. I watch as his respirations drop to 8 (his Dr. is still taking manual pulse) and then rebound to 12. He stays stable so everyone returns to their routine. They continue with the backpoke and the give me the option of giving him another drug to reverse the affects and wake him up. Since he was stable I opted not to give him anything else. The Dr. then preceeded to tell me how much he got. From the numbers she gave me he was given 4 1/2 times what they usually give him and over double what he should have for his body weight. (I talked to the pharmacist after and had him calculate it out. He thinks it was at least 6 x's what he should have had.) I then sat down with the Dr. and two of the hospital administrators to discuss the days events. They assured me the protocol for this drug (Versed) would be changed throughout the hospital. If you want my opinion, which I gave them, it was bound to happen. They hospital pharmacy only stocks a 5mL bottle of Versed. When it is ordered, they send the full bottle. What isn't used is thrown away so protocol has always been to draw everything out of the bottle into the syringe since it is wasted anyway. They dilute it down so it is in a 10mL syringe. Anyone that has had to flush a line knows that saline is in a 10 mL syringe too. I assume the nurse picked it up thinking it was saline and pushed the full amount through. Needless to say, it was a leathal dose.
I am so very THANKFUL for the blessing he recieved the night before, the power of the Priesthood, and the two worthy priesthood holders that were able to administer to him. I witnessed another MIRACLE in our journey and know Kael has a special mission on this earth. I am so happy I get to enjoy this journey with him and am honored to be his MOM!
On another note, they promised Kael would be done with chemo on October 22nd!! To say we are looking forward to it would be an understatement! He still has one more backpoke that we are trying to talk them out of. Three of the last three backpokes have been quite tramatic so we just want to be done. The Dr. said we can discuss this but because we have had a different chemo going into his back than most ALL patients (because of his stroke) we really need to finish it out. We will make that decision sometime within the next three months.
